Must Have Plugins for WordPress Website

Plugins are snipets of code that you add to your WordPress website that add additional functions to your website. In the last post, I showed you how to add the social media plugin to easily place the icons on your website to allow your visitors to click and immediately be connected to your social media accounts.

There are tons of plugins that do lots of things. I will offer the caution that you do have to be a bit careful. Sometimes plugins can interfere with your website. It is possible that a plugin is not compatible with other plugins, and then your website will be messed up. If you are going to add plugins, do it slowly and test it out to make sure it wont’t negatively affect your site. I am definitely not saying not to use plugins, they are one of the great things about WordPress, just use some cautions.

I have recorded a demonstration on how to add plugins for you.

On my other website, I wrote about the most recommended plugins. I am copying that list here for you.

Akismet – that comes pre-installed on most WordPress templates. It is a spam filter, and it does a good job catching the spam comments.
Google Analytics – it will give you lots of information about traffic that comes to your website like how many people come to your website, where they came from, the pages they went to, how long they stayed and more.
All in one SEO or WordPress SEO by Yoast – I have heard great things about both of these plugins. They will make it easier to use the keywords to get the attention of the search engines. Some of the themes like Thesis have the SEO built into the theme.
Sociable or Sexy Bookmarks - Places icons for social media so people can easily share content form yourwebsite.
Contact 7 – provides an easy way to create contact forms
XML Sitemap – Creates a site map that Google uses
WP WordPress Database Backup – This makes it super easy to back up your site and even have it emailed to you.

Please ask any questions you have. I love comments and would like to see discussions about WrodPress

WordPress Header can be Changed with the Click of the Mouse

Change WordPress Header with Click of the MouseThe WordPress Header is the first thing your visitor will see when they come to your site. The default header is nice, but there are other easy options too.

Would you believe me if I told you that it is as easy as a click of the mouse? I know that sounds almost unbelievable, but fortunately for all of us, it is true.

The worldwide open source developers of WordPress know that there are a lot of us who are flunkie techies. If that wasn’t true, “WordPress for Dummies” wouldn’t be in bookstores across the globe. Don’t believe me, just hop over to Amazon and see for yourself.  ”I told you so”, two points for me.

Okay, that is pretty snarky, so I will put my money where my mouth is and show you how easy it is to change your header on the Twenty Ten WordPress template. Go to your dashboard. By now I am sure you have figured out that the dashboard is the place where all the action takes place, it is where you are in the drivers seat!

Once you are at the dashboard, find the Appearance setting and click on Header.

Click on header under ApperanceThat will open up the next screen with all the other default options.

Headers included in Twenty Ten WordPress template

To choose a different header, all you have to do is select one of the other choices, and update. I told you it was as easy as the click of the mouse! If you don’t like those options, I recorded a short video to show you what else you can do.

I hope that helps. If you do decide that you want to get a custom header designed, you could get started really inexpensively by going to Fivrr. I have not yet used them, but since you only have to pay five dollars, it may be worth the chance. I will go and try them and tell you what I think.

If you have questions or comments, please ask. If you would like a video about something specific, let me know. If I know the answer, I would be glad to do it.
